The Lowden F-35 12-Fret combines an AAAA-grade Lutz spruce top with a back and sides made from carefully selected Indian rosewood. It is a guitar for players who appreciate clear articulation, warmth, and a rich harmonic decay. The neck joint at the 12th fret complements the characteristic F-style body, creating a versatile 12-fret guitar that is particularly well suited to fingerstyle and open tunings.
Sonically, resonant bass notes meet clear highs and a finely graduated response. Melodies can unfold over a warm foundation, while individual voices remain distinct in more complex chords. This makes the F-35 particularly appealing for arrangements in which bass, accompaniment, and melody intertwine.
Materials and Construction
The AAAA-grade Lutz spruce top is combined with an AAAA-grade Indian rosewood back and sides. This combination of woods provides transparency, tonal depth, and long sustain. The way these characteristics manifest in detail depends on the instrument as a whole, not on the tonewood alone.
The five-piece neck, made from mahogany, rosewood, and walnut, supports an ebony fretboard. With a 650 mm scale length and 45 mm nut width, the F-35 offers ample room for nuanced fingerstyle playing. The string spacing at the bridge is 56 mm.
Flamed maple binding and an abalone and ebony rosette provide subtle accents. These are complemented by gold Gotoh 510 tuners with ebony buttons, as well as a bone nut and bridge insert. The hand-polished satin finish completes the specification.
Tone and Playability
The sensitive response invites players to explore dynamics and tonal colour. Soft arpeggios and free-standing melodic lines suit the guitar’s character as well as powerfully accented passages. The guitar can also be used with a plectrum to bring out rhythmic contours and individual runs, showing that fingerstyle is by no means its only application.
In open tunings such as DADGAD, open strings can provide a tonal foundation over which melodies and chords unfold. The F-35 is also a versatile choice for accompanying vocals, from understated fingerpicking to fuller chordal playing.
