The Hohner Essential Roots ER1-S0SB is a compact 12-fret parlor guitar in the 0-style, unmistakably inspired visually and conceptually by the early pre-war Gibson flattops – particularly the Gibson L-1, the instrument inextricably linked to blues icons like Robert Johnson. The compact body with a deep lower bout, the 12-fret neck joint, and the characteristic dark two-tone sunburst finish precisely emulate this vibe.
Sonically, the ER1-S0SB delivers what its name promises: roots and Delta blues. Mid-range, percussive, dry, with the slightly compressed "grit" in the sound that one seeks for authentic acoustic blues, bottleneck/slide playing, and ragtime picking. Technical highlight: the factory-installed NVI system (Non-Variance Intonation) with compensated nut and saddle for clean intonation – not a given in this price range.

Materials and Construction

  • Top – solid Sitka spruce: A real plus in this price range – solid tops sound more open and develop more over time than plywood tops.
  • Back & Sides – mahogany (laminated): Matte, ultra-thin satin finish (Micro Thin Finish) for maximum wood resonance.
  • NVI System (Non-Variance Intonation): compensated nut and saddle for clean intonation across the entire fretboard – factory installed.
  • 0-body, 12-fret, short scale length 616 mm: narrow, waisted parlor body shape with neck joint at the 12th fret – close to the pear-shaped original form of the Gibson L-1 from 1926. The short scale length reduces string tension and makes the guitar pleasantly easy to play.
  • Sound characteristics: mid-range, percussive, dry – typical roots and Delta blues sound. Ideal for bottleneck/slide, ragtime picking, and acoustic blues.
